Discover your 'spiritual home' in Weisdale and
Whiteness
Shetland's central mainland is characterised by its
charming community settlements and scenic coastline. Take a tour
and discover a hidden gem nestled neatly amidst these beautiful
landscapes - an art gallery in a converted mill.
A tour around the likes of Tingwall, Weisdale
and Whiteness gives way to popular walking spots where you can spot
wildlife and rare flora and fauna. Why not celebrate the Year of
Creative Scotland in 2012 and combine sightseeing with an
exploration of local arts and crafts?
Stop off at the Bonhoga
Gallery at Weisdale Mill, a beautifully restored mill
where you can find a range of local and international art on
show.
Bonhoga - which means ‘my spiritual home’ - is
an acclaimed centre of the arts which showcases 10 shows a year in
the main gallery and another 10 in the lower gallery. Take in the
latest instalments before making your way through to the popular
cafe in the south-facing conservatory. The cafe overlooks the
Kergord Burn and serves up delicious fresh food, much of which is
locally sourced.
Also in Weisdale, you will find Shetland
Jewellery, a workshop creating beautiful pieces
inspired by Scandinavian mythology, local wildlife, and traditional
Celtic designs. Take a tour of the workshop to see the jewellery
being created on site and visit the shop to treat yourself or find
the perfect gift for family or friends.
After a spot of shopping, be sure to
appreciate the views out to Whiteness Voe and Weisdale Voe, both
are stunning scenic spots providing great photo opportunities.
