Board a boat at Neptune's Staircase
The Highland landscape is spectacular all year
round from the lush greens of spring and summer to the golden hues
of autumn and finally, the silver dusting that accompanies
winter.
The Great Glen Way
is an ideal route for appreciating this epic scenery, whether you
are mountain biking the entire distance or merely taking in a
stretch on foot. Flat towpaths and woodland tracks make this easy
for those who are less experienced, while Munro baggers can take in
several as they wish.
Start on the west coast, close to Fort
William, to discover a feature which acts like a giant ladder for
boats - Neptune’s Staircase. This astounding structure links Loch
Linnhe to the Caledonian Canal in a series of eight lock gates.
Commercial boats and pleasure craft travel over 64 feet in
height as they make their way towards Loch Ness, Inverness and the
Moray Firth.
However you choose to travel, follow the route
to reach Loch Ness where you can take a detour to
Urquhart Castle. Positioned on a promontory overlooking the
mysterious Loch Ness, this impressive stronghold was once home to
the MacDonalds and the Grants. Learn more in the exhibition at
the visitor centre and see if you can spot the legendary
monster in the loch.
In nearby Drumnadrochit you can soak up the
myths surrounding the famous loch at the Loch Ness Centre and
Exhibition. Another alternative is to take a detour to
Glen Affric, considered one of the most beautiful glens in
Scotland.
The final destination on this picturesque
route is Inverness. The Highland capital is alive all year round.
Take a leisurely stroll along the frosted banks of the river before
enjoying some shopping or dining in the heart of the city.
