Dine in a former ice house

After working up an appetite in the crisp winter air, try some of the incredible seasonal delights on offer around the Highlands.

Head north to Scrabster at the tip of Scotland and you’ll be surprised to find yourself in a former ice house and salmon bothy dating back to the 1800s. At the renowned Captain’s Galley, you can experience a truly unique restaurant where the menu changes daily depending on the catch. Owner Jim Cowie purchases only the best seafood from the local fish market or directly from the boats.

You might also be surprised to find four Michelin star restaurants in the Highlands - Boath House, Inverlochy Castle, The Albannach and Kinloch Lodge.  Find out more about these restaurants and Michelin star dining in Scotland.

The Isle of Skye lies off the west coast and is a regular pilgrimage site for foodies. One of the most romantic eateries on the island, The Three Chimneys is an iconic crofter’s cottage where the low-beamed ceilings and original fireplaces offer a cosy atmosphere on colder days.

Back on the mainland, Loch Ness Lodge near Inverness offers fine dining using organic, ethically prepared and locally sourced produce wherever possible. From Highland beef to oak smoked salmon and lamb, the menu changes regularly depending upon what is available in season.

Try fantastic local fare produced by Caithness based company Mey Selections who, wherever possible, source ingredients and products from within a 100 mile radius of the Castle of Mey from honey and oatcakes to whisky and award-winning beef. His Royal Highness The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, is the President of the Castle of Mey Trust and encourages strong links to be formed between farmers, fine food producers, and consumers.

Moray is whisky country, and you can follow the Malt Whisky Trail up the valley of the Spey and beyond, sampling as you go. Some of the industry’s most famous and most popular names are here, including Macallan, Cardhu, Glenfarclas and Glenfiddich.

Wherever you go in the Highlands, you are sure to find individual dining experiences in sometimes unexpected locations.
