Spot incredible wildlife in the Highlands

Head to the Highlands for a chance to spot an incredible array of wildlife, from native Scottish species to unusual and unexpected animals. Did you know that the region is now home to the UK’s only Arctic musk oxen? The two females, mother and daughter Karin and Madelon, arrived at the Highland Wildlife Park, Kincraig in mid January making them the first to be imported into the country in 24 years.

Discover a variety of other intriguing species at the Highland Wildlife Park, including a polar bear, red pandas and even amur tigers! Keep a keen eye for sightings of red squirrels, wildcats and pine martens, as you explore by foot before driving through the rest of the park. The park is also home to many mountain species including Chinese gorals and yaks while reindeer and arctic foxes thrive on the tundra.

The Highlands also boast the UK's only free roaming reindeer herd in the Cairngorm mountains. Just six miles from Aviemore, join a guided tour at the Reindeer House in Glenmore to learn more about the animals and their natural habitat, and meet the reindeer themselves, who each have their own distinct personality. Under the supervision of a trained guide, you can even feed the reindeer.

The Cairngorms National Park is abuzz with all kinds of wonderful wildlife so be sure to bring your binoculars for a chance to spot ptarmigan, mountain hare, otters and maybe even eagles. Hop on the funicular railway and look out for these wild sights as you admire the spectacular views from the Cairngorm plateau to the Monadh-liath. Stop at the Ptarmigan Restaurant, the UK’s highest eatery and enjoy a delicious hot chocolate while admiring the stunning scenery.

The Highlands is one of the best places in the world to spot whales and dolphins. Follow the Wild Coastal Trail which gives great hints and tips on how and when you can see these magnificent sea creatures, as well as providing a simple code so as not to disturb their natural environment. If you’re lucky, you might also spot a white-tailed sea eagle during your trip. For a great chance of a sighting, head to the Aros Centre in Portree, Skye where they beam back nest-cam footage of the UK’s largest bird of prey.

Spotting wildlife is a great activity to enjoy in the Highlands and you’ll be amazed at the great variety of species you can see!
