Immerse yourself in the history of the Highlands

The history of the Highlands surprisingly stretches back millions of years, and where better to begin the voyage than at the dawn of time at the award-winning Loch Ness Centre & Exhibition. Discover the legend of the Loch Ness monster as part of Scotland’s epic journey.

Visit Culloden, near Inverness, the site of the last hand-to-hand battle ever fought on British soil in 1746. You might be surprised to find you can walk the actual battlefield, restored to how it would have looked on the day of battle. In the new, state-of-the-art visitor centre, feel the tension as you stand at the centre of battle while all around Jacobites and government soldiers charge. From the rooftop viewing area you get a tremendous vantage point of the famous battlefield.

Close by, step back an incredible 4,000 years in time and visit the enigmatic Clava Cairns. This collection of burial cairns and standing stones are one of the best preserved Bronze Age burial sites in Scotland.

For an altogether different experience, head into the city of Inverness and be charmed in the Old Town as you shop in the quaint Victorian Market. Why not take a crisp winter stroll along the River Ness, overlooked by Inverness Castle? Discover more about the city of Inverness.

Finally, visit the mighty Fort George which hosts a variety of events and has an extensive display of ancient weaponry and firearms plus regular period combat displays.

Look out for historic secrets as you travel around the Highlands and become part of a living history which unfolds up to the present day.
