Take on the epic challenge of Carnoustie this winter
Golf has been played at Carnoustie
for several centuries and this historic east coast venue boasts no
less than three truly outstanding courses, all of them rated in the
top 50 links courses in the UK and Ireland by Golf Digest in June
2011.
Carnoustie’s Championship Course has hosted the Open seven
times, most recently in 2007 when Irishman Padraig Harrington
lifted the Claret Jug. Scotland’s own Paul Lawrie won the Open at
Carnoustie in 1999 and Tom Watson and Gary Player have both
triumphed here in the past.
The Burnside Links, at Carnoustie, is a shorter but nonetheless
demanding affair with tight fairways, heather, whins and pot
bunkers. The short holes are a real feature with the famous Barry
Burn coming into play on a few of them.
Carnoustie’s third course, the Buddon Links, was opened in 1979
and is a great introduction to links golf. The holes around the
turn are a particular thrill, requiring all your concentration to
score well.
The clear winter air means the views over the east coast are
even better than usual, so get ready to emulate golf’s heroes by
heading to the fairways and making the most of the discounted
winter rates.
Enjoy a winter’s day on the greens, whether you are a seasoned
enthusiast or just a beginner, before heading back to the luxurious
Carnoustie Hotel for a deserved warming drink afterwards.
