Explore the courses of the Scottish Borders
The Scottish Borders boasts some of the
Scotland’s finest scenery and the golf is sublime too.
In this historic region you’ll find some of
the friendliest clubs in the country and you can pick up Scotland’s
bestselling golf pass. More and more people are booking a golf
break in the Scottish Borders where there are over 20 courses to
choose from.
One of the region’s highlights is the
Roxburghe
course near Kelso. Situated in a country estate owned by the Duke
and Duchess of Roxburghe, the course’s signature hole is a stunning
par five named Viaduct, the elevated tee offering a breathtaking
view of the river and the viaduct that spans it. The Roxburghe
happens to be one of Sam Torrance’s favourite courses.
Cardrona,
near Peebles, is another top Scottish Borders course and is notable
for its large contoured greens and yawning bunkers. Both Roxburghe
and Cardrona were created by David Thomas, who also designed the
famous Belfry.
Peebles is a
challenging upland course of great character with panoramic views
of the countryside. The town’s motto is ‘Peebles for pleasure’ and
that applies to the golf course too. Hirsel on the
border with England is a testing parkland course with super views
over the Cheviot Hills. This delightful course has even been tagged
‘the Augusta of the Borders’.
Established in 1877, Hawick is the
oldest golf club in the Scottish Borders and counts Nick Faldo and
Colin Montgomerie as honorary members.
Eyemouth
on the rugged Berwickshire coast is an epic challenge and features
one of Britain’s most extraordinary golf holes. The 6th is an
astonishing par three that requires you to hit over a giant gully
to the green.
