Take a trip to Handa Island
Discover the beautiful island of Handa, just
off the coast of Sutherland, and one of the largest seabird
breeding colonies in north west Europe.
Managed by the
Scottish Wildlife Trust and designated a Site of
Special Scientific Interest, the island is a haven for wildlife.
Enjoy a tour of the island to find out more from one of the
friendly volunteer guides.
Explore the fascinating archeological remains
of an old village and graveyard, dating back to the last
inhabitants of this tiny island in 1847. This tiny island community
was once home to 60 residents and elected their own parliament and
queen - the oldest woman in the community.
The people may be long gone, but when it comes
to wildlife, the island is very much inhabited. Each summer the
towering 400 ft cliffs of Torridon sandstone come alive when a
staggering 100,000 birds gather to breed. This stunning
seabird colony includes internationally
important numbers of guillemot, razorbill and great skua. On a calm
day, it’s possible to see over 50 different species of bird.
Aside from the amazing sea bird colonies and
breathtaking cliffs, Handa offers stunning views of the north west
coast of Scotland. You’ll also come across a rich and varied plant
life and it’s an excellent place to spot otters and cetaceans such
as the common dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, minke whale and basking
shark.
Explore the isle of Handa on the 4 mile
circular footpath, which usually takes around three hours to
complete if taken at a leisurely pace. When the weather is good,
many people arrive on the first boat and leave on the last.
The Handa
Ferry will run in 2012 from Monday 2 April to Saturday
1 September and ferry ticket prices include a donation to
the Scottish Wildlife
Trust.
Come and visit the tranquil island of Handa,
you’ll be captivated by the stunning views and seabirds.
