Edith Bowman's Edinburgh Festivals Preview

UK festival queen and one of the country’s top broadcasters, Edith Bowman visited Edinburgh recently to produce a short film showcasing the surprising number of festivals taking place in Scotland's inspiring capital this summer.

During her visit, Edith was astounded to learn about the volume of things to do during this year’s festival from world premieres and Edinburgh debuts to star appearances and the fireworks that explode from Edinburgh Castle’s ramparts. She was also awe struck with a behind the scenes tour of the National Museum of Scotland, which reopens on 29 July after a multi-million pound refurbishment, and a visit to the nineteen century Signet Library just off the city’s iconic Royal Mile, which will host its first ever pop up Champagne bar this August.

She concluded her visit at the Missoni Hotel bar, where she enjoyed some of their delicious snacks and refreshments surrounded by the unique style developed by creative director Rosita Missoni.

The Edinburgh Festivals Summer Season 2011

Edinburgh is the world's festival city with seven festivals throughout the summer.  This year’s festival highlights include:

  •  The world premiere of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle (based on Haruki Murakami’s best-selling novel), directed by Hollywood producer Stephen Earnhart at the International Festival.
  • Alma Mater, a play at the Fringe where low-fi charm meets high-tech in as the audience enters a child’s bedroom with an i-Pad to enjoy a weird and wonderful experience.
  • The first artist designed pavilion in St Andrew Square Gardens as part of The Edinburgh Art Festival. Designed by Karen Forbes, the futuristic curved glass structure will host a programme of events throughout the festival, placing visual art at the very heart of Edinburgh.
  • Trombone Shorty, who is taking the international music scene by storm, making his Edinburgh debut at the Jazz & Blues Festival.
  • Scottish indie bands hooking up with writers from all over the world to produce the nightly literary cabaret Unbound at the Book Festival.
  • The fireworks emerging from Edinburgh Castle every night around 22:30, at the epic Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
